Oh hey there, my favourite cookie in the world. Ever. Meet, the new chocolate orange recipe on my blog.. the chocolate orange NYC cookies!! I have had so many requests for these because of the downright adoration for my other NYC cookies, I thought it was about time!

So.. this recipe, was always going to happen. I’ve made it a few times myself already, and lots of my readers have made these already by swapping out the other chocolates in my other cookies – but I had so many requests for a blog post I didn’t want to say no!

NYC cookies

My NYC cookies are slight variations on recipes that are already on my website. For example, the original chocolate chip NYC cookies are extremely similar to my cookie bar recipes – their are only a few differences to create the giant chunky effect!

This is the same with most recipes – there will always be similarities. Add in some baking powder, change the method slightly and how much the cookie weighs – and you have a new style. The basics will always be the same, but it doesn’t mean you can’t make even more cookies!

Chocolate orange

I thought these beauties deserved a post to themselves because you guys wanted it, but also because the limited edition white Terry’s chocolate orange has been brought out again – and I couldn’t resist using them. I love them!

I won’t be lying when I say I went searching until I found them – and then I bought SO MANY. I have a small portion of my ingredients cupboard dedicated to all things chocolate orange, especially as Christmas is coming, so it only seemed right!

 

Of course, they won’t be around all the time – but you can use any flavour Terry’s chocolate orange you want. Dark, milk or white – or, you can use a different chocolate orange themed chocolate! Lindt, Cadbury’s orange buttons, and so on – you can even just use plain flavour and use the orange extract in the cookie for the orange!

Triple chocolate base

I decided for these to use my triple chocolate NYC cookies as the start – because I adore the chocolate base. They are, of course, extremely similar to my Terry’s chocolate orange cookies that have been on my blog for five years already though! 

Flavour

If you don’t like chocolate orange, you probably aren’t reading this post… but just in case you are, the same basis works for other flavours (I mean, I might post more recipes anyway… but just in case) – you can use mint chocolate, lemon, anything! Just swap out the chocolate and flavouring.

Ingredient swaps

If you would like to make these a plain base rather than chocolate, you just need to take out the cocoa powder, and increase the flour to 300g! If you want to use self raising flour instead of plain flour – do a straight swap, and leave out the baking powder. 

Sugar

As mentioned in lots of my other cookie related posts – I MUCH PREFER using granulated sugar and brown soft sugars for the best results – and don’t often use caster sugar at all. It can change the texture and end results – so, if you don’t have granulated use all brown sugar, and vice versa!

Size

Just as a warning, these cookies are huge (part of the NYC Cookie theme) – but if you want to make smaller ones you can. 80g cookies take about 9-10 minutes to bake, and 60g cookies will take about 8 minutes!

Chocolate Orange NYC Cookies!

Giant gooey triple chocolate NYC cookies based on the famous cookies from New York City!!

Ingredients

  • 125 g unsalted Butter
  • 100 g light brown sugar
  • 75 g white granulated sugar
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1 tsp orange extract (Or zest of 1 orange)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional!)
  • 250 g plain flour
  • 35 g cocoa powder
  • 1 + 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 300 g chocolate orange chocolate, chopped

Optional Topping

  • Chocolate Orange Segments

Instructions

  • Add your butter and sugars to a bowl and beat until creamy - I use my stand mixer with the beater attachment!
  • Add in your egg, and orange extract or orange zest and beat again. If using the vanilla, add it in now as well!
  • Add in the plain flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and salt and beat till a cookie dough is formed!
  • Add in your chopped chocolate orange chocolate and beat till they're distributed well!
  • Weigh your cookies out into eight cookie dough balls - they're about 115-120g each!
  • Once they're rolled into balls, put your cookie dough in the freezer for at least 30 minutes, or in the fridge for an hour or so!
  • Whilst the cookie dough is chilling, preheat your oven to 180C Fan, or 200C regular! If your oven runs hot, go for 160C-170c.
  • Take your cookies out of the freezer/fridge and put onto a lined baking tray. I put four cookies per tray!
  • Bake the cookies in the oven for 12-14 minutes. I don't personally flatten the cookies, as they flatten enough during baking - however, if you like flat cookies, flatten them a bit before baking.
  • Once baked, add on another piece of chocolate orange and press down slightly to stick to the cookie. Leave the cookies to cool on the tray for at least 30 minutes, as they will continue to bake whilst cooling!
  • ENJOY!

Notes

  • I used a mixture of milk, dark and white terry's chocolate orange - but you can use any combination!
  • These are best eaten on the day of baking, but can be revived by microwaving for 15-30 seconds, or putting into a hot oven for 2-3 minutes!
  • You can freeze the raw cookie dough easily, and bake from frozen if you don't want to bake the entire batch! If you are baking straight from frozen you may need to bake for 1 or 2 extra minutes.
  • Once baked, these will last for 4-5+ days!
  • If you can't access one of the sugars, use all of the other one - i.e. all granulated, or all light brown sugar. Using other sugars can change the texture. 
  • You can make the cookies half size (60g) and bake for about 8 minutes. 
  • You can make the cookies slightly smaller (about 80g) and bake for about 9-10 minutes!

    Love the recipe! If i wanted to make it plain cookie base (as in not chocolate if that makes sense!) would i just take out the cocoa powder and replace it with flour?

    Fantastic Cookies!
    The shop didn’t have any Terrys chocolate orange so I used Dairy milk Orange instead and they were delicious!
    Plateful we’re gone in minutes!

    Hi, hoping to bake these tomorrow, but could only get 200g of orange chocolate. I have milk chocolate, which I can make up the extra 100g with, but worried it wont taste as orangey! Should I put extra orange essence/orange zest in to compensate? Thanks!

    If I made the dough on Tuesday but kept it in rolled balls in the fridge, will they still be ok to cook on Saturday morning? They are incredible! I love all you recipes x

      I say maximum in the fridge is 48 hours – ideally just freeze and bake from frozen! x

    I tried making these but they didn’t flatten on their own in the oven they kind of domed! So I flattened them with a spatula when they came out the oven but any idea why this might it have happened? thank you! x

      This can happen if the cookie dough balls are too tightly rolled or the cookie dough is over beaten!

    Hi! First of all: your recipes are the BEST. I love how you write a short introduction and how the ingredients can easily be switched from grams to ounces. It makes it all very fool proof (which I am, a fool 😉 Lately I am dreaming of a White Chocolate and Lemon NYC Cookie. However, I have doubts about the amount of lemon zest I will have to put in. May I ask your opinion? Will the amount of zest come to the same as with the orange in this cookie? I wonder if I could incorporate Lemon Curd in the cookie although I do not know what happens when this is exposed to heat.. do you have any expierence with this? Thank you for sharing!

      Yes so lemon zest would be used in the same way as in this recipe, but I wouldn’t know about the curd – I imagine it wouldn’t end well! x

    I loved these, I do like most things with orange chocolate. They were a little too sweet for my partner but he ate them regardless as they are still absolutely delicious.

    Your cookies are amazing! I totally adore them!
    My husband said they are a bit too sweet for him, can I just leave out a certain amounting sugar or does this affect the consistency?

      Changing any quantities can change the consistency – you could try using slightly salted butter maybe, or add a pinch more salt?

    So far it tastes amazing but the mixture is quite dry and the chocolate isn’t really in it some it just at the bottom. Is this normal or should it be wetter if not can I add anything else I’m making them now. ♡ x

      It depends how you are mixing it – if its by hand it can be harder but you just need to knead it all together and it should come together! If you are desperate you can add a splash of milk but it doesn’t need it when I make it xx

    Perfect cookies for a chocolate orange lover! I found that my cookies came out still quite ball-like so I just squashed them a little when they came out the oven and they were just as lovely!
